{"id":64,"date":"2009-08-22T09:12:15","date_gmt":"2009-08-22T16:12:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/?p=64"},"modified":"2009-11-12T11:03:16","modified_gmt":"2009-11-12T18:03:16","slug":"one-heart-in-tibet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/2009\/08\/22\/one-heart-in-tibet\/","title":{"rendered":"One HEART in Tibet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">As many of you know the focus of my personal photographic work over the past 5 years has been around the empowerment of women and girls\u2014especially in the developing world.\u00a0 This week there is a must read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/08\/23\/magazine\/23Women-t.html?_r=1&amp;emc=eta1#\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> in the NY Times Magazine\u00a0by Nicholas Kristof and his wife Sheryl Wu Dunn for anyone interested in this subject.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The article states:<span style=\"color: #999999;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span>&#8220;There\u2019s a growing recognition among everyone from the World Bank to the U.S. military\u2019s Joint Chiefs of Staff to aid organizations like CARE that focusing on women and girls is the most effective way to fight global poverty and extremism. That\u2019s why foreign aid is increasingly directed to women. The world is awakening to a powerful truth: Women and girls aren\u2019t the problem; they\u2019re the solution.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I just returned from a heartbreaking trip to Tibet where I planned to continue my work on women\u2019s issues. \u00a0I went to document the work of the NGO \u2018One HEART\u2019 which has been addressing the high rate maternal and infant mortality &#8212; especially among Tibet\u2019s nomadic population.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-65\" title=\"Tibet09_0688\" src=\"http:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Tibet09_0688.jpg\" alt=\"Tibet09_0688\" width=\"504\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Tibet09_0688.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Tibet09_0688-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/>\n<p><em><span class=\"caption\">Tele who is 63 with his grandson Sonam Choedon. Sonam was born near Lake Namtso where One HEART hoped to start working this year. Like most Nomad children he was born only with the help of family members. Luckily the birth went without complications.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>As in many parts of the world, indigenous people don\u2019t get or seek medical help because of different cultural beliefs and misunderstandings.\u00a0 Many Tibetan Nomads believe that in the critical moments after birth the infant is very susceptible to a \u2018Hungry Ghost\u2019 that can jump onto and occupy the newborn.\u00a0\u00a0 These ghosts that can be carried by any stranger are believed to make havoc in one\u2019s life.\u00a0\u00a0 Needless to say a Nomad doesn\u2019t want a doctor or midwife that they barely know attending the birth of their child.\u00a0 They also believe that the blood of childbirth offends the spirits of the house.\u00a0\u00a0 Therefore many births take place in a cold and dirty stable away from the warm fire in their yak-hair tents. It\u2019s no wonder that an estimated three women\u00a0died for every 100 births and one in ten infants\u00a0did not survive their first year of life. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-66\" title=\"Tibet09_0109-b\" src=\"http:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Tibet09_0109-b.jpg\" alt=\"Tibet09_0109-b\" width=\"504\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Tibet09_0109-b.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Tibet09_0109-b-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/>\n<p><em><span class=\"caption\">Adu, 26 and her husband Tadro, 31 live at 16,000 feet where they raise yaks and goats. Since the Tibetan\u2019s have never had a midwife tradition, both of their children were born at home without any prenatal, birthing, or postnatal care.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>To address these cultural beliefs One Heart\u2019s Tibetan staff trained local nomadic women to be midwives and provided a plastic sheet to contain the \u2018spiritual blood pollutants\u2019 that could be taken out of the tent after the birth.\u00a0 The ten year old program\u00a0has been\u00a0extremely successful.\u00a0 Last year there were no maternal deaths in the two counties they worked in.\u00a0\u00a0 Unfortunately, One HEART&#8217;s contract\u00a0to continue their work\u00a0was not renewed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is often said when a mother dies the family dies\u2014students drop out of school to help take care of younger siblings, and fathers strain under the added workload.\u00a0 It is such a shame that a program that was so successful at saving families from the devastating effects of losing\u00a0a mother had to end.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-99\" title=\"Tibet09_0612\" src=\"http:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Tibet09_0612.jpg\" alt=\"Tibet09_0612\" width=\"504\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Tibet09_0612.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Tibet09_0612-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/>\n<p><em><span class=\"caption\">Nomadic life in Tibet is changing fast.\u00a0 Solar panels, cell phones and satellite radios are starting to appear.\u00a0 The cell phone is becoming an important tool in the campaign to reduce maternal mortality.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Thank you for visiting my blog!
