Dr. Walsh has not only studied many of the great spiritual traditions of the world, <!--more-->but has spent years practicing many of their contemplative techniques and spiritual practices. His latest book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drrogerwalsh.com\/books\/the-world-of-shamanism\/\" target=\"_blank\">The World of Shamanism<\/a> focuses on humanity&#8217;s oldest spiritual tradition. I consider it to be one of the most complete and accessible works on the subject of Shamanism.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/71924213?title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0\" height=\"366\" width=\"650\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Walsh defines three key features of shamans found in various cultures.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>They can voluntarily enter altered states of consciousness.<\/li>\n<li>They experience themselves journeying to other realms or worlds. (Somewhat akin to an out of body experience.)<\/li>\n<li>They use the journey to acquire knowledge or power to help people in their community.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I have watched Shamans from many different cultures as they have entered trances and journeyed to various inner worlds. I saw that the method of induction varies from culture to culture. In Mongolia and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/2013\/04\/03\/lindsa-shaman-of-the-nanai-tribe\/\">Siberia<\/a> it was drumming, in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/2013\/04\/09\/mengatohue-shaman-of-the-huaroriani-tribe\/\">Amazon<\/a> it was psychoactive plants and in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/2013\/04\/17\/janduli-kahn-shaman-of-the-kalash\/\">Pakistan<\/a> the shamans inhaled the smoke from a fire of juniper branches that were soaked with a sacrificial animals blood. Regardless of how the Shamans reached their altered state of consciousness the insights gained from their journeys were always valued greatly in their communities.<\/p>\n<p>Western culture has a very external orientation compared to the indigenous and tribal cultures I have spent time in. Cultures that embrace Shamanism place value on an exploration of our Inner Worlds and have beliefs that reflect on our interconnectedness. I feel my culture could benefit greatly from some of these traditional values and beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>As Roger Walsh puts it:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cAt the present time, our culture is undergoing a remarkable but subtle transformation due to the influx of the world\u2019s contemplative practices together with their spiritualities, psychologies, and philosophies. These are expanding our minds and our perspectives and producing a profound but quiet and as yet little recognized revolution.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Certainly Adam\u2019s journey would be a lot easier if he lived in a culture that fully embraced an exploration of our inner worlds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was very honored to meet and interview Roger Walsh, a professor of Psychiatry and Anthropology at the University of California at Irvine.
