{"id":5483,"date":"2013-07-31T08:28:10","date_gmt":"2013-07-31T15:28:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/?p=5483"},"modified":"2014-03-05T17:58:11","modified_gmt":"2014-03-06T00:58:11","slug":"inner-worlds-unfortunate-events-provoke-adams-return-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/31\/inner-worlds-unfortunate-events-provoke-adams-return-home\/","title":{"rendered":"A Hate Crime Leads to Adam&#8217;s Return Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">Back in May, I got a very unsettling call from Adam letting me know that he was beat up on the beach in Maui, and that he was in the hospital recovering from surgery.\u00a0 His jaw had been broken in three places and several of his teeth had been kicked out.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A group of Hawaiian gang members, who seemed friendly at first, approached Adam on the beach. They exchanged friendly conversation and started playing music together, then suddenly, out of nowhere, they turned on him. As he was lying on the ground, one of the men took Adam\u2019s guitar and smashed it over his head and another picked up a boulder and threw it on his face.\u00a0 Adam went unconscious but witnesses reported that another member had a knife and was about to stab him when someone yelled that the cops were there, so they all scattered. \u00a0Evidently, this type of hate crime is not uncommon in Hawaii.\u00a0 It could have been a gang initiation or an anti \u201cHaole\u201d hate crime. The homeless are easy targets.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a sound byte of Adam\u2019s account of what happen during a phone call I received from him while in Hawaii.<\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-5483-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Hawaii_telcall.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Hawaii_telcall.mp3\">http:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Hawaii_telcall.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>Also, while Adam was recovering in the hospital he got a call from his mother letting him know that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and only had a short time to live.\u00a0 Adam decides to return to Seattle and uses a GoPro I sent him to document his last day in Maui.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/71283938?title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0\" height=\"366\" width=\"650\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Once again, it is Adam\u2019s attitude despite these hardships that I have found remarkable.\u00a0 He told me that he felt a wave of sadness toward the guys that beat him up because \u201cthey were in such a dark place\u201d to have done such a thing.\u00a0 Instead of feeling anger towards them he was more upset about his guitar being broken than his broken jaw.<\/p>\n<p>Adam\u2019s outlook reminds me of the Tibetan Monk, Palden Gyatso, who I met when I was doing my first book on Tibet. The Chinese communist threw him and his whole monastery in prison. He spent 33 years there and was repeatedly beaten and tortured. He was one of three survivors out of 60 monks.
