A longtime supporter of Phil and his work, Kevin Castner is traveling with him and reporting back to us from the field.<\/em> <em>They are also, along with the <a href=\"http:\/\/whattookyousolong.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">WTYSL<\/a> team, helping young women leaders attending a &#8220;Women&#8217;s Leadership Conference&#8221; put on by FFW make a movie for their community.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>All the days are big now, if we are going to pull this film together on time.\u00a0 We need a narrator and a narration track, and Phil needs to find time, with Alicia and Sebastian and Philippa, to order and splice the various one on one interviews we did with the girls, integrate the \u2018B\u2019 roll, \u2018hero\u2019 interviews (not to mention we still need to actually do those latter interviews), weave in the visits we made to various Foundation For Women centers&#8230;and on and on.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1241\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/08\/bonding-with-the-local-community-is-key\/img_0603\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1241\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1241\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1241\" title=\"IMG_0603\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_0603.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1241\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Typical house in the Barrole Burial Ground Neighborhood<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We jump in vans to go to Barrole Burial Ground.\u00a0 The meeting is held in a simple clearing surrounded by their homes.\u00a0 Dirt, cinder blocks, corrugated iron roofs (and windows) are the norm here as elsewhere.\u00a0 No electricity (unless it\u2019s by generator) or indoor plumbing.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been inside a few houses and they are dark in the middle of the day.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t seen a real window; what they use to fill the spaces is tied into place.\u00a0 And yet, when you look at a house long enough, a beautiful woman often comes out.\u00a0 That pride, and their evident optimism for the future shine through the squalor.\u00a0 FFW gives them the resources to help themselves to reach that future faster.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1243\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/08\/bonding-with-the-local-community-is-key\/img_0613\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1243\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1243\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1243\" title=\"IMG_0613\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_0613.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1243\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Welcoming Committee at Barrole Burial Ground<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Emily Peal addresses the women, reminding them, as she and Deborah Lindholm have told me many times, \u201cWe are not just here for the money; also to help you change your life.\u201d\u00a0 Emily always has them clap for themselves, for what they are doing.\u00a0 Deborah, Ann Lovell, and Barbara Stinson all say something.\u00a0 The ever present noise of babies crying and an enthusiastic rooster plays in the background.\u00a0 Emily has another way to get attention and build affection.\u00a0 She\u2019ll say, \u201cHello-o!?\u201d, which is always met by \u201cHi-i!\u201d from her audience.\u00a0 At moments like these it is easy to see a good deal of the reason that FFW works \u2013 it is the bond she has with her borrowers. \u00a0Which also might explain why efforts by non-Liberian NGO\u2019s are very often unsuccessful.\u00a0 Charles Naiwah, FFW\u2019s program director, tells the women \u201cWhen things get hard, you get hard!\u201d.\u00a0 It\u2019s always hard here.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1244\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/08\/bonding-with-the-local-community-is-key\/img_0614\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1244\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1244\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1244\" title=\"IMG_0614\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_0614.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1244\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ann Lovell, Emily Peal, Barbara Stinson and Charles Naiwah at Barrole Burial Ground<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Next we\u2019re off to Wroto Town.\u00a0 I ask Charles what these women do.\u00a0 He lists pretty much everything:\u00a0 charcoal selling, hair braiding\/plaiting, small restaurants and, generally the service industry.\u00a0 We get to the meeting and it\u2019s much the same as before.\u00a0 Charles says, \u201cEvery time we come here we see women working hard.\u201d\u00a0 Wroto Town has 45 women in the FFW program.\u00a0 I hear another often repeated mantra:\u00a0 Charles says, \u201cWomen, don\u2019t just sit there.\u201d and they lustily reply, \u201cDo something positive with the men!\u201d\u00a0 Their futures really do lie, heavily, on their colorful shoulders.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1245\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/08\/bonding-with-the-local-community-is-key\/img_0623\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1245\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1245\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1245\" title=\"IMG_0623\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_0623.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1245\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charles Addressing a Rapt Audience at Wroto Town<\/p><\/div>\n<p>These speeches and homilies may sound preachy to western ears, but the women at every center love them.\u00a0 The encouragement FFW, and especially \u2018Mommy\u2019 Peal, gives them buoys each time.\u00a0 Deborah and Ann talk the talk, but they have also proven to these women, over many years, that they walk the walk as well.\u00a0 They have not written a check and gone back to cushy lives never to return, but rather have come back over and over to help.<\/p>\n<p>Ann Lovell brings 6 or more suitcases with her to Liberia.\u00a0 She distributes pencils and pens here, and helps supply many other centers as well as stocking FFW HQ.\u00a0 She says, \u201cI keep coming back.\u00a0 I see your work.\u00a0 I see you raise yourself up and I am so proud of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Back at FFW HQ, we spend the rest of the day brainstorming on the narration track.\u00a0 We had several options for whom to choose as narrator, but Martha Daniels spoke up and just said, \u201cI\u2019ll do it.\u201d\u00a0 She is the oldest of the team, has had one of the hardest roads, and is our first college graduate.\u00a0 Speaking up shows leadership.\u00a0 Now Martha is furiously taking notes.<\/p>\n<p>Up next &#8211;
