A longtime supporter of Phil and his work, Kevin Castner is traveling with him and reporting back to us from the field.<\/em> <em>They are also, along with the <a href=\"http:\/\/whattookyousolong.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">WTYSL<\/a> team, helping young women leaders attending a &#8220;Women&#8217;s Leadership Conference&#8221; put on by FFW make a movie for their community. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I strive today I can be somebody tomorrow.\u201d\u00a0 Martha Daniels, 31, the first Foundation For Women in Liberia university graduate.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1266\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/06\/women-leaders-begin-movie-production\/picture-5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1266\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1266\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1266\" title=\"Picture-5\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Picture-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1266\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Curiosity of WTYSL<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Phil tells the girls if we\u2019re going to make a movie we have to have a theme.\u00a0 He says it is their movie and they have to decide on the audience they want to reach and the message they want to send.\u00a0 In surprisingly short order, these ten girls who\u2019ve never met each other, decide they want to make a movie about teenage prostitution.\u00a0 They want to direct it to at risk girls or girls already \u2018on the street\u2019 engaged in prostitution.\u00a0 The message they want to convey is summarized by Melvina Duo,19, of Buchanan in Grand Bassa, \u201cWe want to show them there is another way to a better life\u201d.\u00a0 The twin solutions are faith and education, not necessarily in that order.\u00a0 Our girls want to inspire other girls to succeed and be leaders!<\/p>\n<p>The wheels are turning fast.\u00a0 Before the day of the big Women\u2019s Conference we need to reach the girls \u2018hero\u2019s\u2019 they will be interviewing.\u00a0 We also need to get some stats on prostitution in Liberia, find some prostitutes for them to talk to, write a narration track, interview each of the girls one on one, and a myriad of other tasks.\u00a0 It seems daunting.\u00a0 But hey, we have five and half days!\u00a0 With the help of FFW staff and the WTYSL team I think we will pull it off.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1234\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/06\/women-leaders-begin-movie-production\/img_0658\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1234\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1234\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1234\" title=\"IMG_0658\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_0658.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1234\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Girls Brainstorming<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Theresa Tyee, 27, from nearby Red Light in Paynesville, has the interesting idea that one of them needs to dress up as a prostitute and then the others can tell her how to change her life.\u00a0 Things get giggly, as the girls look each other over to see if anyone will volunteer to dress up as a prostitute.\u00a0 Phil explains this would be a docudrama, not a documentary.<\/p>\n<p>Next, the girls think of questions for their \u2018hero\u2019s.\u00a0 They come up with \u2018what was your struggle; your journey?\u2019,\u00a0 \u2018How did you achieve your dreams?\u2019, \u2018What were the problems you faced?\u2019, \u2018Were you rich, or poor?\u2019 \u2018What kind of school did you attend\u2019 and \u2018What did you have to do to get a good education?\u2019.\u00a0 Each girl faces challenges every day and they want to make sure their hero\u2019s really had to work, struggle and sacrifice to get to where they are.<\/p>\n<p>When the girls get back from lunch Phil goes out to scout locations for their interviews.\u00a0 There is a place across the street that looks promising but they want $20US so that\u2019s out.\u00a0 FFW HQ is too confining and anywhere close to the street is too noisy.\u00a0 Finally, he finds a place&#8230;&#8230;down the street, along a muddy, garbage strewn creek, in a clearing behind some hovels.\u00a0 It\u2019ll work.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1267\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/06\/women-leaders-begin-movie-production\/picture-28\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1267\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1267\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1267\" title=\"Picture-28\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Picture-28.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1267\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Phil - Curiosity of WTYSL<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Our last interview of the day is with Hawa Seysay, 23, now living in\u00a0Montserrado,\u00a0Monrovia.\u00a0 She had said the major obstacle to achieving her dreams was war.\u00a0 During the Liberian civil conflict her family fled into the bush to escape the violence.\u00a0 They hid, but ran out of food.\u00a0 Hawa cries as she tells us how her father went to a village simply to try to get them something to eat, and was never seen again. \u00a0We have all read stories like this in the press;
