A longtime supporter of Phil and his work, Kevin Castner is traveling with him and reporting back to us from the field. <em>They are also, along with the <a href=\"http:\/\/whattookyousolong.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">WTYSL<\/a> team, helping young women leaders attending a &#8220;Women&#8217;s Leadership Conference&#8221; put on by FFW make a movie for their community. <\/em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Over the last two days we have met the ten young women that the Foundation For Women has chosen to come to Monrovia.\u00a0 They are here for leadership training and to attend a Women\u2019s Leadership Conference next week.\u00a0 Together, over the next 6 days we will also make a movie about their lives and what makes them leaders. \u00a0While making the film they will be interviewing, some of the individuals they admire like doctors, professional journalists and community leaders.\u00a0 They will then take their completed film back to their villages and communities in an attempt to inspire other young women to go after their dreams.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1150\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/03\/young-liberian-women-leaders\/_mg_9107\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1150\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1150\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1150\" title=\"_MG_9107\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/MG_9107.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1150\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Young Women Watching Footage of Themselves<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Deborah introduces us to them, and then they introduce themselves to us.\u00a0 In age they range from 17 to 31.\u00a0 They are from many different parts of Liberia, from Grand Gedeh far away in the east, from Nimba, Grand Bassa, Sinoe and Bong.\u00a0 Their goals are to become nurses, doctors, journalists and boutique hairstylists.\u00a0 One even wants to be an accountant.<\/p>\n<p>FFW COO Jade Martin leads them through a couple of exercises to loosen them up.\u00a0 She has them articulate, in words and pictures, their dreams and fears.\u00a0 Then each reads her response and answers questions.\u00a0 As each finishes Jade tells her to take the sheet with her fears, rip it up and throw it on the table.\u00a0 What are those fears?\u00a0 Foremost is access to money, without which they can\u2019t finish their educations.\u00a0 Hawa Seysay from ELWA says simply \u2018war\u2019.\u00a0 Carolyn Armah says \u2018bad habits or a short life\u2019.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1162\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/03\/young-liberian-women-leaders\/img_0552\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1162\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1162\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1162\" title=\"IMG_0552\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/IMG_0552.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1162\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Young Women Watching Footage of Themselves<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Jade asks them to tell us who their heroes are, who inspires them, who they would like to interview.\u00a0 One of them wants to meet the President Ellen Sirleaf, another wants to interview FFW\u2019s LIberian CEO Emily Peal. \u00a0 Doctors, nurses, prominent journalists and the Defense Minister round out their wish list.\u00a0 Emily is an cinch, and now FFW staff will make the necessary calls to see what they can do to make those wishes come true.<\/p>\n<p>Phil talks to the girls about the documentary movie they will be making.\u00a0 It is up to them to decide what the theme of the movie will be.\u00a0 He talks to them about the constituent parts of a movie and how they\u2019ll each have a part, both making it and in it.\u00a0 He explains the different aspects of movie making including:\u00a0storyboarding, sound, camera, directing, editing and logistics.\u00a0 They all choose what team they\u2019d like to be on and we divide them up.<\/p>\n<p>Next, we will be visiting some of the girls at home in their own environments.\u00a0 Stay tuned!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Phil is in Liberia documenting the work of Foundation for Women (FFW), an organization that strives to continually support and encourage impoverished women, both globally and locally, by funding and creating microcredit programs.
