{"id":4270,"date":"2012-10-17T12:44:40","date_gmt":"2012-10-17T19:44:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stirringthefire.org\/blog\/?p=4270"},"modified":"2013-07-03T16:54:45","modified_gmt":"2013-07-03T23:54:45","slug":"from-the-field-the-story-of-bisanti-and-bishal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/17\/from-the-field-the-story-of-bisanti-and-bishal\/","title":{"rendered":"From the Field: The Story of Bisanti and Bishal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\"><em>Our founder, Phil Borges, along with two Volunteer Production Assistants, <a href=\"http:\/\/rachelpaulagray.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rachel Gray<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/catherinecussaguet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Catherine Cussaguet<\/a>, are currently in Nepal working with <a href=\"http:\/\/resurge.org\/home\/home.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Resurge International<\/a>. \u00a0<!--more-->The organization does incredible work to\u00a0provide free reconstructive surgeries for the poor and builds year-round medical access in underserved areas. \u00a0 We will post their stories throughout the coming week. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4272\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stirringthefire.org\/blog\/2012\/10\/17\/from-the-field-the-story-of-bisanti-and-bishal\/nepal-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4272\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4272\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4272 \" title=\"Nepal 1\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/stirringthefire.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Nepal-1-500x333.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4272\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bishal, who was badly burned after crawling into a cooking fire when he was 8 months old.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>Written By Rachel Gray<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Bisanti is a courageous twenty two year old mother from the Rolpa district in Nepal.\u00a0 Her eldest daughter Binita is four years old and is a very energetic child.\u00a0\u00a0 Her youngest son Bishal is a year and half years old and sufferers from severe burns on his face, head, and hands.\u00a0 Since the accident Bisanti\u2019s husband has abandoned their family, running off with another woman in India.<\/p>\n<p>Cooking over an open flame is very common in Nepal, and in many developing countries.\u00a0 Women in rural villages often work in the fields harvesting for their families.\u00a0 Often the children are left to take care of themselves while their mothers are out working.\u00a0 When Bishal was eight months old he crawled into the cooking fire while his mother was out fetching water for the family.<\/p>\n<p>When Bisanti came home to see her son in flames she was in total shock.\u00a0 She immediately scooped him up and rushed him to the nearest hospital, a six-hour journey by bus. They stayed at the hospital for one week and then returned home after little care had been provided.\u00a0 Bisanti was determined to get her son help.\u00a0 She sold a portion of her land for 100,000 rupees to be able to afford a bus ticket to Kathmandu, an eighteen-hour journey, and surgery for her son.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4271\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stirringthefire.org\/blog\/2012\/10\/17\/from-the-field-the-story-of-bisanti-and-bishal\/nepal-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4271\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4271\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4271\" title=\"Nepal 2\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/stirringthefire.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Nepal-2-500x333.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4271\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bisanti holding Bishal while talking to Dr. Shankar<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When they arrived in the city, the family lived at a brickyard in the \u00a0foothills of the Kathmandu.\u00a0 We accompanied Bisanti and her \u00a0children to the site for our first day of filming.\u00a0 Families who live there greeted us, and Bisanti reunited with old friends.\u00a0 Even though it was not the season for brick making, there were still women in the fields shoveling dirt.\u00a0 Bisanti gave us an example of what work was like, strapping a cloth around her forehead carrying heavy bricks on her back, with her baby strapped to her front.\u00a0 Bisanti worked in the brickyard in exchange for housing (a small brick shack), while her son was being operated on.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to selling her land, Bisanti had to take out a huge loan to afford the initial surgeries performed on her son.\u00a0 These surgeries are very expensive and it was hard to find a surgeon who would operate on such a small child. Eventually, Bisanti found out about Dr. Shankar at the Kathmandu Model Hospital, who provides surgeries for burn victims free of charge with the help of ReSurge international.\u00a0 Dr. Shankar has done two surgeries on the child to repair his eyelid and done askin graft on his forehead.
