{"id":33,"date":"2010-07-15T17:10:36","date_gmt":"2010-07-16T00:10:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/?p=33"},"modified":"2014-05-14T15:31:26","modified_gmt":"2014-05-14T22:31:26","slug":"un-creates-new-structure-for-empowerment-of-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/2010\/07\/15\/un-creates-new-structure-for-empowerment-of-women\/","title":{"rendered":"UN Creates New Structure for Empowerment of Women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">At the beginning on the month the United Nations General Assembly voted unanimously to create a new entity to accelerate progress in meeting the needs of women and girls worldwide.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">UN Women<\/a> combines the resources of four previous branches\u00a0of the UN that focus on gender equality and women\u2019s empowerment and will be operational by January 2011.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Taken from a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/2010\/07\/statement-by-the-un-secretary-general-on-the-creation-of-un-women\/\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> by the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;UN Women is a recognition of a simple truth: Equality for women and girls is not only a basic human right, it is a social and economic imperative. Where women are educated and empowered, economies are more productive and strong.
