{"id":261,"date":"2009-10-08T17:46:24","date_gmt":"2009-10-09T00:46:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/?p=261"},"modified":"2009-10-08T17:46:24","modified_gmt":"2009-10-09T00:46:24","slug":"fahima-kabul-afghanistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/2009\/10\/08\/fahima-kabul-afghanistan\/","title":{"rendered":"Fahima &#8212; Kabul, Afghanistan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">There are many who believe that the greatest handicap to development in Muslim Middle Eastern societies is the status and roles they give to women.\u00a0 Nowhere has this been more evident than in one of the poorest and dysfunctional countries in the world\u2014Afghanistan.\u00a0\u00a0 During the reign of the Taliban essentially all women working outside the home were fired; 7o% of the school teachers, 50% of the civil servants and 40% of the doctors were women.\u00a0\u00a0 You can imagine what eliminating women from the labor pool did to the function of Afghan society.\u00a0 To make matters worse many of the women were widows because of the lengthy wars in their country.\u00a0\u00a0 These women were left with no way to support their families.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-262\" title=\"Fahima\" src=\"http:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Fahima.jpg\" alt=\"Fahima\" width=\"280\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Fahima.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Fahima-148x150.jpg 148w, https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Fahima-297x300.jpg 297w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/>In 2005 I met Fahima, a teacher since 1985.\u00a0 She was one of the thousands of professional women who lost their jobs when the Taliban came to power in 1996. \u00a0In defiance of the Taliban and at great risk to herself, Fahima opened a clandestine school for young girls.\u00a0 At one point 130 girls were coming to her home each week to study math, science, and the local language, Pushto.\u00a0 When the girls were asked why they were going to Fahima\u2019s house they said she was their aunt. \u00a0Although harassed by the religious police and threatened with beatings and worse, Fahima continued operating her school for girls until the fall of the Taliban in 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Fahima now\u00a0helps girls catch up with the education that they missed out on during the reign of the Taliban.\u00a0<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-282\" title=\"school10027\" src=\"http:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/school10027.jpg\" alt=\"school10027\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/school10027.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/school10027-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/school10027-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/>\n<p>Unfortunately, it is not news, that even with the fall of the Taliban Afghans still face\u00a0severe challenges.\u00a0 Most children work to help their family survive and\u00a0few are able to attend school.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-272\" title=\"1Street0228\" src=\"http:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/1Street0228.jpg\" alt=\"1Street0228\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/1Street0228.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/1Street0228-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/1Street0228-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-275\" title=\"kabul1day0109\" src=\"http:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/kabul1day0109.jpg\" alt=\"kabul1day0109\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/kabul1day0109.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/kabul1day0109-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.philborges.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/kabul1day0109-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"caption\">Humaria sells eggs as a street vendor to help her family survive. As with many families in Afghanistan, years of war have left them very poor.
