\"\"<\/a>How is the global movement to empower women and girls advancing?\u00a0 The United Nations Statistics Division recently released The World\u2019s Women 2010<\/em><\/a> which shows that progress towards gender equality has been made in some areas, such as school enrollment, health and economic participation. At the same time the report shows that much more needs to be done to close the gender gap in critical areas such as power and decision-making and violence against women.<\/p>\n

In light of our recent election<\/a> where, despite the women elected, the US had a record number of women who ran for office, here are the findings regarding power and decision-making taken from the Executive Summary<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Around the world, a lack of gender balance in decision-making positions in government persists.\u00a0 Women continue to be underrepresented in national parliaments, where on average only 17 percent of seats are occupied by women. The share of women among ministers also averages 17 percent. The highest positions are even more elusive: only 7 of 150 elected Heads of State in the world are women, and only 11 of 192 Heads of Government. The situation is similar at the level of local government: female elected councilors are underrepresented in all regions of the world and female mayors even more so.<\/em><\/p>\n

In the private sector, women are on most boards of directors of large companies but their number remains low compared to men. Furthermore, the \u201cglass ceiling\u201d has hindered women\u2019s access to leadership positions in private companies.\u00a0 This is especially notable in the largest corporations, which remain male-dominated. Of the 500 largest corporations in the world, only 13 have a female chief executive officer.<\/em><\/p>\n
