A longtime supporter of Phil and his work, Kevin Castner is traveling with him and reporting back to us from the field.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat God has joined together let no man put assunder.\u201d\u00a0 I photographed this on a poster in a Sinkor living room.\u00a0 Mama Liberia is very religious but the misspelling of the final word, coupled with \u2018man\u2019 earlier, also gives an unintended history lesson.\u00a0 Tribalism and greed, fueled by power and testosterone did indeed bring this country ass-under.\u00a0 Now, it is clawing its way back, a few rock piles and charcoal sacks at a time.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1459\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/15\/more-evidence-microcredit-changes-lives\/img_0845\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1459\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1459\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1459 \" title=\"IMG_0845\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_0845.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1459\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#39;Let no man put assunder&#39; Poster<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We hit a great trifecta when finishing the our last of our interviews while documenting the work of FFW.\u00a0 First up was Monica Flanjay, the center chief for both Fanta Town Matadi and New Matadi.\u00a0 She takes us into her home, down a hallway, and we sit, surprisingly, on part of an old, solid oak furniture set.\u00a0 There is history in this house.\u00a0 It has painted walls with pictures.\u00a0 There are lace curtains shading the light coming through the barred windows, and a TV in a corner.\u00a0 There are real windows, and the rooms have doors.\u00a0 Of course, another part of its history also shows.\u00a0 The electrical sockets are empty and the home is dark; the only light is natural.\u00a0 There is a landline telephone, the only one I have ever seen in a private home.\u00a0 I ask Monica if it works and she gives me the answer I\u2019ve heard from many Liberians on similar topics, \u201cBefore the war&#8230;&#8230;\u201d.\u00a0 Monica used her first loan to buy cold water.\u00a0 Now, in the rainy season she sells charcoal.\u00a0 She takes us to her warehouse, tells us she buys 200-300 bags at a time.\u00a0 Her success means she only sells wholesale, doesn\u2019t have to break big bags into little bags.\u00a0 She\u2019s moving up market.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1460\" style=\"width: 276px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/15\/more-evidence-microcredit-changes-lives\/img_0847\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1460\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1460\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1460\" title=\"IMG_0847\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_0847.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1460\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Monica Flanjay&#39;s Charcoal Warehouse<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After our talk we thread our way through her neighborhood, which she estimates at 15,000 people or so, and I reflect on the speed of my changing perceptions.\u00a0 Three weeks ago I might have been put off by the dirt, or lack of light, or the rundown furniture and shabby, many times repaired, faded cushions.\u00a0 But after the squalor of West Point the \u2018grinding poverty\u2019 I described so long ago when I first arrived now seems middle class, and Monica\u2019s home a veritable oasis.\u00a0 As I am reminded again and again, everything is relative.<\/p>\n<p>At New Matadi we sit down with Angeline Reeves.\u00a0 She was introduced to Foundation For Women by Korpo Zayzay, the center manager for Fanta Town (together the \u2018Matadi\u2019s\u2019 have 45 women in the program).\u00a0 Angeline has been in the FFW program for over a year and she describes exactly what she\u2019s done with her loans.\u00a0 She used her first, 6,000 Liberian Dollar (LB) loan to buy dried fish and sell them around her neighborhood.\u00a0 She paid that off and borrowed 9,000LB and got into the timber (\u2018plank\u2019) business with her fianc\u00e9, who lives in the bush.\u00a0 She paid off that loan and borrowed 12,000LB (about $170USD) which she has used to buy inventory to stock a storefront selling fabrics on the local high road.\u00a0 Angeline is a serial entrepreneur.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1461\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/15\/more-evidence-microcredit-changes-lives\/img_0852\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1461\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1461\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1461\" title=\"IMG_0852\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_0852.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1461\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Angeline Reeve&#39;s &#39;High Street&#39;
