A longtime supporter of Phil and his work, Kevin Castner is traveling with him and reporting back to us from the field.<em><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Charles tells Marion and Josephine that I might buy a wheelbarrow, but then he asks \u2018Who it will belong to?\u2019 and \u2018Who will maintain it?\u2019 and \u2018Who will be responsible for it?\u2019.\u00a0 I see that offering to buy the wheelbarrow is only part of the equation.\u00a0 Does it belong to the group, or to Marion and Josephine?\u00a0 If the latter, will that engender jealousy and resentment?\u00a0 It is imperative that they think, now, of putting money aside for maintenance because hauling rock isn\u2019t easy on man or machine.\u00a0 I already had high respect for Charles, but it just went up another notch.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1431\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/12\/ffw-group-visit-rock-crushers-part-2\/charles\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1431\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1431\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1431\" title=\"Charles\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Charles.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1431\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charles Speaking about FFW Programs<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Marion and Josephine pile into our vans and we head off to buy a wheelbarrow. It takes about 2 minutes and 38-USD to buy exactly what they want.\u00a0 I ask them if they can figure out how to bring it back.\u00a0 No problem.\u00a0 As we drive off in the opposite direction they are negotiating with a motorcycle taxi; their wheelbarrow will have an exciting ride to its new home.<\/p>\n<p>After I purchased, through Charles Naiwah\u2019s arrangement, a wheelbarrow for this center, they called Emily Peal and requested three more.\u00a0 The nerve of these greedy women!\u00a0 But c\u2019mon, really?\u00a0 It turns out that the Foundation For Women often gives gifts like this to make life go a little easier.\u00a0 In this case Deborah, Ann and Barbara are each going to donate a wheelbarrow.\u00a0 Charles will figure out the details.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1439\" style=\"width: 276px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/12\/ffw-group-visit-rock-crushers-part-2\/img_0639-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1439\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1439\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1439 \" title=\"IMG_0639\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_06391.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1439\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">You Try That!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Of all the individuals I\u2019ve met, the person I\u2019ve connected\u00a0most with has been Josephine Jeffries at RC.\u00a0 Her reserve and dignity, the fire in her eyes when she said, \u201cI am proud.\u201d, all touched me.\u00a0 Phil, too, so we go to her home to photograph her going about her daily routine with her family.<\/p>\n<p>It is a long way away from RC, though on foot (of course, regardless of the weather)\u00a0there is a shortcut through a swamp she uses.\u00a0 She used to live right at RC, but the landlord raised the rent from $40USD to $75USD and she couldn\u2019t afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Our first glance into her home, through a short deluge, is not so bad.\u00a0 The ceilings are high, maybe 9 feet.\u00a0 The foundation looks solid and the interior is dry.\u00a0 But when she takes us into her children\u2019s bedroom it is almost pitch dark at 10:30 am.\u00a0 Their windows are corrugated metal, they block almost all the light, and they are tied into place.\u00a0 Phil finds a way to film them cooking and cleaning laundry in their main room, then brings them all outside.\u00a0 Ten children are wandering around, playing on the porch and in the dirt.\u00a0 Josephine has five kids and only three of her daughters are here.\u00a0 The other seven kids are nieces\/nephews\/neighbors.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1432\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/12\/ffw-group-visit-rock-crushers-part-2\/img_0647-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1432\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1432\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1432\" title=\"IMG_0647\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_06471.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1432\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Front Yard of Josephine&#39;s Shared Home<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Phil makes the comment that she has a lot of space and Josephine politely tells him that they only have two rooms in the building.\u00a0 They pay $10 for each room per month.\u00a0 The main room is shared, not only by all the families but also functions as a kind of warehouse filled with strewn benches, cinder blocks, rusty pipes, boards, all jumbled at one end.\u00a0 I find out there is a well around the corner, and that they share a generator, which they use sparingly.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1433\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/12\/ffw-group-visit-rock-crushers-part-2\/img_0640\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1433\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1433\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1433\" title=\"IMG_0640\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stirringthefire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_0640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1433\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Josephine&#39;s Shared Main Room<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I\u2019m going to back up a moment.\u00a0 Three days ago I ran into Josephine at FFW HQ.\u00a0 I think she was asking to see Emily Peal, who wasn\u2019t there.\u00a0 She asked me to talk to her.\u00a0 Alone, she talked about how she wants to continue her education.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t ask me for money; she just told me with a soul-piercing look of sadness that she needed to go back to school.\u00a0 I told her she probably needed to talk to Emily, and I guess she did, because FFW has agreed to pay for her education!\u00a0 I try to imagine what it must be like for Josephine:\u00a0 she is intelligent, has education, and is stuck doing hard manual mindless labor, and knows that without a big helping hand she\u2019ll be doing that into the foreseeable future, until her fingers stiffen or her back gives out, or she gets injured.<\/p>\n<p>But, her group has a total of four wheelbarrows they didn\u2019t have eight days ago.\u00a0 That should make some things easier, more efficient and less dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>We will be visiting the slums of Monrovia next to learn more about the work Katie from <a href=\"http:\/\/morethanme.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">More than Me<\/a> is doing. \u00a0Don&#8217;t miss it!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Phil is in Liberia documenting the work of Foundation for Women (FFW), an organization that strives to continually support and encourage impoverished women, both globally and locally, by funding and creating microcredit programs.
