Phil is in Liberia documenting the work of Foundation for Women (FFW), an organization that strives to continually support and encourage impoverished women, both globally and locally, by funding and creating microcredit programs. A longtime supporter of Phil and his work, Kevin Castner is traveling with him and reporting back to us from the field. They are also, along with the WTYSL team, helping young women leaders attending a “Women’s Leadership Conference” put on by FFW make a movie for their community.
Over the last two days we have met the ten young women that the Foundation For Women has chosen to come to Monrovia. They are here for leadership training and to attend a Women’s Leadership Conference next week. Together, over the next 6 days we will also make a movie about their lives and what makes them leaders. While making the film they will be interviewing, some of the individuals they admire like doctors, professional journalists and community leaders. They will then take their completed film back to their villages and communities in an attempt to inspire other young women to go after their dreams.
Deborah introduces us to them, and then they introduce themselves to us. In age they range from 17 to 31. They are from many different parts of Liberia, from Grand Gedeh far away in the east, from Nimba, Grand Bassa, Sinoe and Bong. Their goals are to become nurses, doctors, journalists and boutique hairstylists. One even wants to be an accountant.
FFW COO Jade Martin leads them through a couple of exercises to loosen them up. She has them articulate, in words and pictures, their dreams and fears. Then each reads her response and answers questions. As each finishes Jade tells her to take the sheet with her fears, rip it up and throw it on the table. What are those fears? Foremost is access to money, without which they can’t finish their educations. Hawa Seysay from ELWA says simply ‘war’. Carolyn Armah says ‘bad habits or a short life’.
Jade asks them to tell us who their heroes are, who inspires them, who they would like to interview. One of them wants to meet the President Ellen Sirleaf, another wants to interview FFW’s LIberian CEO Emily Peal. Doctors, nurses, prominent journalists and the Defense Minister round out their wish list. Emily is an cinch, and now FFW staff will make the necessary calls to see what they can do to make those wishes come true.
Phil talks to the girls about the documentary movie they will be making. It is up to them to decide what the theme of the movie will be. He talks to them about the constituent parts of a movie and how they’ll each have a part, both making it and in it. He explains the different aspects of movie making including: storyboarding, sound, camera, directing, editing and logistics. They all choose what team they’d like to be on and we divide them up.
Next, we will be visiting some of the girls at home in their own environments. Stay tuned!
