In 1996 I began traveling to those remaining cultures whose beliefs encourage a spiritual communion with the environment. I began to interview and photograph the people we call animists and their spiritual mediators--the shaman.

Here are some of the people who still believe the natural world is animated with powerful spirits that can nurture or destroy depending upon the respect they are shown--people for whom the environment still holds a sacred enchantment--people who still believe in the spirit of place.
