Gabo was helping her great-granddaughter Goiti collect firewood when I first saw them. Less than a year before, Goiti’s father died of malaria. Her mother, who by custom is not allowed to remarry, is now responsible for grazing their goats as well as cooking, caring for her children and collecting firewood and water.
